Leimert Park

To view Leimert Park is to see an example of true entrepreneurial activity and economic development realized. The historic Leimert Park was named for developer Walter Leimert over 60 years ago. Founded in the 1920’s, today Leimert Park is the cultural center for African- American cultural in Los Angeles, CA. Originally this community was developed in mind for low and middle income families, but it has emerged as a melting pot where the middle and upper middle class dwell.
The mom and pop shops brings a unique twist to the community; enticing people from other areas to experience Leimert Park Village small town feel on a regular basis. Leimert Park is a unique neighborhood balanced with a business district and residential living. On one hand the business district is lined with all forms of cultural shops. While on the other hand Leimert Park homes were created with Spanish and Mediterrian architecture in mind. Many homes were built for multi- families and single family homes almost as if the modern day family was in mind. On the business side of things Leimert Park Village serves the community with jazz venues, Afro-centric clothing shops, art galleries, dance studios, and restaurants. One perk of Leimert Park is living within walking distance of the many festivals that the Leimert Park Village host. It is the home of more festivals than any other park within Los Angeles. Festivals like the Harvest Moon Festival and the highly anticipated Juneteenth.
Galleries, studios, boutiques, restaurants, coffee houses, and jazz clubs line the streets of Leimert Park, which literally make it a sanctuary for the artist, activist, musician, poet, and the power shopper looking for specialty items. An example of the neighborhood’s pulse is the drum circles that can be heard for miles every Sunday. Leimert Park Village is home to a number of fantastic soulful restaurants like M&M, The Kitchen, and Sunny's Spot to name a few and a neighborhood conscious of its people’s want has its share of pleasant coffee shops such as 5th Street Dick's and Lucy Florence. These coffee shops fill the air with performance by jazz, blues, spoken word (poetry), and hip- hop artists. Leimert Park has pride and is rich with multiple cultures evident from store fronts designs, diverse homeowners, or its patrons walking the through the area.
