Baldwin Hills
Baldwin Hills was development during the early 1950’s. Baldwin Hills originally named for Elias “Lucky” Baldwin, one of the wealthiest and prominent landowners and financiers in California of the 19th century. As time past Baldwin Hills earned additional names “The Hills”, “Golden Ghetto” and the “Black Beverly Hills”. Most recently Baldwin Hills has been making a nationally recognized name on the self entitled BET reality TV show, “Baldwin Hills”. The reality shows the true life ventures of the teenage African- Americans yuppies that live in “The Hills”.
Baldwin Hills is predominantly African American but there has been an influx of Caucasian, Asian, and Latino families chasing the American Dream of affordable housing in a conventional neighborhood where you can raise kids. An area covered with modernistic homes, swimming pools, and panoramic views of the city from perched, stilted homes on steep hillsides. If you are not a fan of rolling hill then the Baldwin Village, a.k.a. The Flats located in the southern portion of Baldwin Hills, or Baldwin Vista is the ideal location for you. Typically these sections have smaller homes and offer a more secluded ambiance, but they are apart of Baldwin Hills Estate.
One reason why Baldwin Hills is a united neighborhood is because of the efforts of the Baldwin Hills Estate Homeowners Association established since 1954. This association has kept residents active, preserved the residential neighborhood, the vista views, the reputation, and high standards for the neighborhood. The homeowners association is not the only reason for the communities’ power for Baldwin Hills is home to many current politicians like: Council Member Bernard Parks of the Los Angeles’ 8th District, Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke of LA County Supervisorial District #2, Assembly Member Majority Floor Leader Member Karen Bass of the 47th District, and Senator Kevin Murray of the 26th California State Senate District.
No matter the title “The Hills”, “The Flats”, Village Green, Baldwin Vista, or “The Black Beverly Hills” they all fall under one umbrella, Baldwin Hills. Baldwin Hills is home to some LA's the most spectacular views, stunning homes, and one of the most recognized upper-middle class neighborhoods in Los Angeles, CA.
